Let's face it, building a home can be the biggest investment you will ever make and therefore the most stressful. And the least things you would want is to pay more than needed and further stress and worries.

1. Weigh your needs and wants.

Being practical can always save you money. Make sure you build only within your budget. Determine how many rooms you need and how big each one is going to be. Do you really need that sixth room if there are only four of you, or a two-car garage if you only have one car? Determine what you and your family needs and be careful not to mix it with the things you want.

3. Monitor the building process.

This will make sure your expectations are met. If you do not monitor the process, you may not get what you want and what you pay for. If you and your construction builder came to an agreement that you will use a certain brand for, let's say, air conditioning, do not accept other brands particularly those of lower range of price.
