By going to the official website of your state, you can find out if any civil lawsuits have been filed against the contractor. If you want, you can also do a search nationwide to find out if there have been any lawsuits in other states.

4. When you are talking to the owner of the company, make sure that you get references that you can check up on. Also ask if there are any homes that you can take a look at to see the actual completed work by their company. Call the references and ask them what their experience with the home builder was like. When you inspect other homes, talk with the homeowners and ask them what they thought of the home builder, any problems they had and the experience in general.

5. Real estate agents can be a good resource when you want to learn about a potential home builder, and you can talk with local builder associations to see if there have been any problems or complaints with the home builder.

6. When you get the contract from the builder, check it over and take your time to study it before you sign anything. Make sure that a completion date is listed, as well as any penalties that they will incur if they do not meet the completion date.
