Owners-builders of kit homes make many construction mistakes; some minor, some quite major. Kit homes are designed for amateurs to construct, but not everything is as straight forward as it seems. Mistake 1: Embark on amateur metal roof installation, installing dry-walling and laying slabs.
Tip: All three of these tasks are usually performed by experienced professionals. Do not attempt them without previous experience or prior tech learning. Up-skill in these areas first or get your wallet out.
Mistake 2: Forget to glue down the floor sheeting.
Tip: Nailing and even screwing down tongue and groove floor sheeting on a raised floor system wont stop the floor squeaking. Apply builder grade glue under all sheets on all joists then fasten.
Mistake 3: Have all concrete pier holes poured at once.
Tip: A concrete truck will pour 21 pier holes with concrete in an hour. It is okay if you have 5 helpers, but if not, have one third poured each day. New kit builders should pay the extra and not have a heart attack trying to get every pier set and leveled and concrete finished and domed.
Mistake 4: Fail to plumb the door jams.
Tip: Interior prefabricated frames arrive pretty well plumbed, but by the time they are pushed up and nailed down they can be well out, making hanging a door a trial. And just because the king studs are vertical does not mean the trimmer studs and lintel trimmers are plumb.
Mistake 5: Not enough solid props on the wall frames.
Tip: Solid props ensure wall frames remain plumb throughout the roofing process. Roof truss weight will easily shift wall frame top plates when they are moved into position and fastened. Use adequate exterior and internal props and do not remove them until the roof is complete.
