Americans Support Government Policies to Enable Homeownership

By a significant margin, Americans still associate a strong housing industry with lower unemployment and increased revenue for local economies, so they believe the government should continue to promote homeownership through tax incentives.

According to a new survey, nearly 75 percent of United States voters find it both reasonable and appropriate for the Unites States government to provide tax incentives that promote homeownership. And more than eight out of ten strongly believe authorities must do more to support the middle class by improving the housing finance system and supporting policies that encourage homeownership.

Information gleaned from a survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) concludes that the American public believes policies that support opportunities for homeownership will also restore the health of the economy. The survey also determined that an overwhelming majority of participants questioned are strongly against eliminating the mortgage interest deduction. The issue has political implications, with voters saying they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who supported the elimination of the interest tax deduction.

Despite the ongoing troubles plaguing the housing market, Americans also continue to regard homeownership as an integral foundation of maintaining the middle class, explains Celinda Lake, president of Lake Research Partners, which conducted the survey along with Public Opinion Strategies.

The survey also found that three-fourths of voters believe that owning a new home is the best long- term investment they can make, and a near equal amount of renters intend to buy a home in the future. Over 90 percent believe that raising the down payment requirements for a home loan will make it more difficult for average, middle-class Americans to buy a home, which would eventually lead to homeownership being the domain of the rich.

All of this reaffirms that now is the time to buy a no money down house. Fortunately, many areas of the country have affordable, new housing available with modest monthly payments. So check out local home builders to find the property that best suits the needs of you and your family.
