For scenery, the Bay of Islands and Northland can't be beaten. Living here, you'll be inspired by ancient kauri trees, awesome geographical wonders such as the Hole in the Rock and the spiritual significance of the Far North and Cape Reinga.
With a population of nearly 2,000 Paihia is a place where it's easy to be well known or to keep to yourself. Russell has a smaller population, with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, making it a place where you'll soon get to know your neighbours. For those with families considering buying real estate in Northland, there are several early childhood centres in Russell and Paihia as well as three primary schools - at Russell, Paihia and Opua. Secondary education is nearby at the Bay of Islands College in Kawakawa.
