In the Indian state of West Bengal, the city of Kolkata (the third biggest city in the country) functions as a major hub for that part of India. Traditionally a port city, it has been the centre for trade in the region since the 18th Century when it was created as a separate city from three surrounding villages and becoming the incoming and outgoing point for all trade and commercial activity for the British East India Company. In modern times the city has been prosperous and has had several people that have reached the very peak of their fields - this includes Nobel laureates in arts and science. Clearly real estate here is highly prized.
