The Home Owner Builder is always looking for an edge. And rightly so! Building a home is a long, complicated, drawn-out process. Anything you can do to simplify and streamline your project, your decisions, and your labor requirements is important to consider.
I've made a career of helping people build their own homes and over the years, I've gotten the following question a lot.
Question: Are Kit Homes & Packaged Homes really the best for Owner Builders?
Answer: There are a lot ways to skin a cat. But, there are many more ways to build a home. This question concerns one of those ways... Kit Homes.
First, what is a "Kit Home?" A Kit Home is basically a home in a box. But, it's unassembled. You have to build it yourself or get builders to do it for you.
Now, just as there are many ways to build a home, there are many types of Kit Homes. A few examples include:

Each type has its own unique advantages depending upon what you want. Should you, as an Owner Builder use a kit home? Like so many things, the answer could easily be "Yes and No."
Yes:
If you are a DIY (do it yourself) Owner Builder, then using a kit home package could save you time and money and give you a better finished product. A top notch Kit Home company, with excellent customer service might be your best bet.
No:
On the other hand, if you are planning to use contractors to build your home, it's probably not a good idea. Builders who are not accustomed to these packaged homes will often find fault with the package and increase their fees.
Do Your Research Carefully
If you decide to build with a packaged home, take the time to research and check references. These packages are not all created equally. Look for how complete the package is, what the delivery costs are, and make sure they have excellent customer service to remedy problems.
Don't rush, analyze carefully, and plan well.
