Building a home? Thinking of doing a major remodel. These are exciting adventures but they can be scary things to contemplate. You can't help but wonder what could go wrong!

Here's a question I often get:

Question: How do you evaluate bids and contractors?

Answer:

Don't rush it! You don't have to pick the first person or company that puts a good foot forward. Most people and businesses have learned that trick! You must go deeper.

You're looking for experience, honesty, licenses, communications and price.

These are the qualities to look for when selecting the builders you'll work with. You'll notice I put pricing last! Most people look at the price first. This one understanding will help you more than any other bit of advice I could give.

A Good Contractor Isn't Defined by His Bid Price

You see, the bid is more than just the price. It should include materials, results and time frames, among other things. But, the most critical aspect in evaluating your potential building professionals is a function of doing your homework ... and that means checking their references.

This is why you must take your time. Demanding references doesn't do any good unless you check with them. And to evaluate them wisely, set expectations and ask specific questions to understand if the bids you get from contractors provide you with what you want and if they are likely to follow through on their promises.

Here are the key points to demand and evaluate:

·        Quality of work

·        Exceptional communications

·        Performance that matches promises

·        Competitive pricing

With a clear expectation of what you're looking for, you'll be far more likely to get it!

Experience Counts with Builders
