The region of Estepona is approximately 75km from Malaga international airport and 30km from Gibraltar. It encompasses the beautiful coastal towns of Casares, Manilva, Duquesa, Estepona old town and towards Sotogrande. This area is considered to be more typically Spanish and much less ostentatious than its neighbour, Marbella. However, over recent years it is fast becoming a sophisticated Spanish holiday destination offering many facilities. Due to its perfect location, being nestled between the sparkling Mediterranean Sea and protected on the other side by the Sierra Bermeja mountains, Estepona enjoys a micro-climate with over 325 of sunshine each year.
In August 2010, the town was host to America's First Lady, Michelle Obama and her daughter Sasha, when they holidayed at the exclusive Villa Padierna Hotel. Despite the influx of tourism over the past decade, Estepona has succeeded in maintaining its pueblo charm and character. However, due to its charm Estepona has become a fashionable place for many Europeans wishing to live on the Costa del Sol. Estepona Marina is situated at the western point of the promenade and this is a perfect place to enjoy some yacht-spotting. If you get up really early you can watch the local fishermen bring in their daily catch in the marina each morning. In the port and surrounding area there is a wide variety of bars and restaurants catering for people of all ages. The nightlife is very different in Estepona compared to Puerto Banus and other coastal towns as here you will find more laid-back entertainment such as cocktail lounges and flamenco shows. However, there are still numerous trendy clubs and most of the action takes place in the port area and in the back streets of the Old Town. Estepona holds its annual feria (festival) in the middle of August and is a wonderful spectacular event that shows off typical Andalusian culture and tradition.
Estepona is renowned for its pristine beaches which stretch along 21km of coastline. If you take a relaxing stroll along these beaches you will come across numerous chiringuitos (beach restaurants) and beach bars. There are also many toilet and shower facilities and childrens' play areas along the coast. At Laguna Village you will find the trendy Puro Beach Club - an adults only trendy place with great music, white sun beds, a swimming pool and bar. This is the currently the place to be seen if you like the jet-set lifestyle and celebrities are often seen here relaxing on the beach. If you enjoy exercising on the beach then as well as a good run on the sand you can also take advantage of the adults' outdoor exercise machines that have been put in place on the beach near Estepona town. As Estepona is located on the southern tip of the Costa del Sol, whilst soaking up the sun on these beaches you can often admire the beautiful silhouette of Gibraltar and the African coast. If you prefer to live on the doorstep of the Mediterranean then Estepona is the ideal place as frontline and beachside properties are a lot cheaper than in Marbella.
Estepona is a great area if you like shopping. The town itself has many small independent stores that sell all kinds of products and there are many cafes so you can take a leisurely stroll through the town. On Wednesdays you will find the town's weekly market located next to the large football stadium. In Estepona Port there is also a smaller market held on Sundays. If you're more into designer goods then you must visit Laguna Village - a beautiful front-line beach shopping mall next to the Kempinski Hotel where you can find expensive shops like Dolce & Gabbana. There are also numerous bars and restaurants here so you really can make a day of it.
If you have children then there are lots of things to keep them occupied. Estepona town has a wonderful childrens' playground which you will find on the seafront. Parents can take a seat and watch their children spend many happy hours here. Further along the N340 you will also come across the Estepona Equestrian Centre where children and adults can take pony rides and lessons are also available. This area is also popular with expats as there are excellent schools and facilities. Estepona town is a great place to live if you like the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you prefer to be in a central location then a property in the heart of Estepona town would be perfect for you.
Selwo Safari Park is a wonderful day out for all the family. During the summer months it extends its opening hours to 8pm so you have a chance to see as many of the 2000 animals as possible. The park is spread out over one million square metres and allows the animals to roam in semi-free conditions. There are extensive gardens and lakes and a trip in one of the safari trucks will take you to the Masai-style village huts and the largest walk-through aviary in Europe. On the safari truck journey you pass many different types of animals such as elephants, bears, tigers, giraffes, rhinos, etc. You can also walk through designated paths and cross rope bridges if you prefer a more relaxed way of seeing the park. However, it is advisable to wear sun protection as most of the park is out in the open and there is little shade. There are several restaurants and cafes and a wide variety of additional activities on offer such as falconry shows, camel rides, archery, trampolining, a rope slide and an adventure playground. For those who really love the safari lifestyle, you can even stay overnight in one of the Masai villages. For the golf lovers out there Estepona is a wonderful place to be. Other excellent courses include Atalaya Golf & Country Club, Estepona Golf, Montemayor Golf & Country Club, El Campanario, El Coto la Serena and Los Almendros. This area of the Costa del Sol is truly a paradise where golfers can enjoy their sport practically all year round. Manilva is a town that remains intrinsically Spanish and is popular with both Spanish and European residents. The municipality is made up of several districts and the area remains very agricultural. The white village of Manilva is located a few kilometres inland and dates back to Roman times. There are remarkably well-preserved Roman baths and an aqueduct. On the coast you will find the small fishing village of Sabinillas. This is a very quiet and undisturbed village located right on the beach.
To the west of Sabinillas you will find the area called Duquesa which has a beautiful bustling port and castle. Duquesa Sports Marina is a small port and golfing community and boasts beautiful beaches, promenades, bars, restaurants, cafes, shops and a trendy nightlife. For the sailing enthusiasts there is an excellent selection of boating activities and two days a week the port plays host to an outdoor traditional market. Duquesa Golf & County Club offers an 18 hole championship golf course and this area is very popular with families and golfers. The club also offers many other facilities such as tennis and squash courts and a fully-equipped gymnasium. If you prefer the vibrant atmosphere of a port but don't have the budget for Puerto Banus then Duquesa is an ideal place to purchase a property.
Further down the coast you will find the exquisite area of Sotogrande, situated within the municipality of San Roque. This is one of the most luxurious residential developments in Europe and boasts amenities fit for royalty. There is an exclusive port and world-class marina with multi-million dollar yachts and apartments. The residential area of Sotogrande is where you will find the homes of some of Spain's richest inhabitants. This is a privileged area with excellent schools and sporting facilities. Prince Charles and other members of the Royal Family are regular visitors to Sotogrande's Santa Maria Polo Club. Sotogrande's beaches are unspoilt and some of the finest golf courses are located in this region; its most famous course being Valderrama, the prestigious championship course which plays host to the annual Ryder Cup.
